This tavern got its name for being surrounded by this poisonous flower. Built within a shallow nook at the base of three hills that are known for the overabundance of purple nightshade, this tavern lights up the secluded recess with an ornate silver lantern hanging over the door. In the moonlight, the lantern makes the valley of nightshade nearest the building look like purple flames in the moonlight.
Nightshade's Lantern, like the majority of Zhoan buildings, is an essentially simple wooden structure, built low and wide, with plenty of room for horses in residence. The Tavern Proper foregos tables in favor of a long bar circling three quarters of the room with plenty of stools--most of which are rarely occupied. Generally the Zhoan prefer to make themselves comfortable on the vibrant floor-cushions that dapple the room. There are no tables--they would get in the way of the horses! The Zhoan typically take meals seated on the floor anyway, so they really don't see this as strange at all. The waitress simply lays out a clean cotton cloth on the floor and puts the meal upon it. Foreigners find it somewhat strange, but the Zhoan seem to think nothing of it, the bar exists primarily for the convenience of visiting centaurs who find the system a bit troublesome and uncomfortable.
The Inn portion of Nightshade's Lantern is a separate but similar building to the rear, built in a bracket shape around a central pasture that has been cleared of nightshade with cobblestone walks about so that patrons may enjoy the view. The rooms, of course, like the tavern, are build with high ceilings and wide doorways, with plenty of room for both elf and horse inside--though it IS rather rare for a Zhoan to choose a warm bed over the night sky, and the Inn of Nightshade's Lantern is primarily inhabited at any given time by Centaurs, Albians, and other foreigners.
Tonight, the tavern is fuller than usual--a cool mist and the beginnings of a light rain outside have brought a good number of Thrae'Goden indoors before the weather catches them unawares, and there appears to be a bit of gambling going on off to one side, boisterous, if improper, jokes circling the tavern proper.
Behind the bar, Eugenia, a barmaid who has worked at Nightshade's Lantern for at least the past twenty years, leans forward, chin resting on her hand, showing off just enough cleavage, as a rather drunken older man details to her some story about his betrothed that one really oughtn't tell such a pretty lady, but she takes it in good humor--this is all par for the course in her line of work.
She lifts her emerald eyes to you as you enter and gives a gentle smile--chestnut hair tied back in a ponytail save two slim braids hanging to the left of her temple. She rolls those eyes bemusedly, as if sharing with you in the joke of 'he is SOOO drunk!' before pretending to pay a little mind. Still, she'd be glad enough for you to come over and order something so she has an excuse to get away...
