Nicolae sat on Shiba, following closely behind the other two riders. Mihu seemed to have perfect control of his steed, but Ren seemed to have quite the opposite effect with his. As well, Nicolae noticed the glances between Ren and Mihu and thought it best to keep from between them.
"So, do we know how long it will take to get to the mines?" Nicolae asked.

Jaiden snickered. He expected a Romari to be cocky, but this? "You really think so? I don't know... there were a lot of villagers, but look what happened to them. Also, have you seen the rest of this little adventuring party? You certainly look like you can handle yourself, but the others..." His voice trailed off absently, tapping his lip with a delicate finger. "Sorry, I don't mean to be negative." He shook off the distant look in his eyes and focused on the Romari sitting opposite, dealing his cards down to the table. "Just being honest." He smirked.

(brain fart! you have to yell at me, Ren, the XP came out for WoW and I get brain farts... lol)
Mihu wiped his palms on his breeches, looking around cautiously. When Nicolae asked him a question, he half-turned in his saddle to address him. His father always taught him to look people in the eye when he spoke. It was respectful.
"Should take no more than half a day to reach the mines. But it will be dark when we get there. We will have to wait until morning to enter, and then we will have to work quickly to be back in town before dark. I fear the yarl is not far off...
"What brought you here, Nicolae? I know Ren came because of the Yarl, but what reason did you have for passing through here at this precise time? I think the town is lucky we all arrived so close together..."

"We have considerable advantages that the villagers lacked. For one, the villagers probably weren't expecting to be attacked. I'm not so certain as to the training of these villagers, but I didn't see anyone who looked as if they had even ever had a sword drawn against them. Once they were disorganized and scattered, they could have had the opportunity to arm themselves but I don't know how many bystanders would be willing to take up arms against a wild creature that could easily reduce them into a fine powder. We have the advantage of not being ambushed, rather, we are the ambushers. A lot of damage can be wrought on a large number of troops by a small number of troops by a properly set ambush. The other advantage we have is if necessary, we could probably pick a few angry villagers and put them on the roofs throwing pitchforks at it or shooting bows." His left ear twitched, and he shook his head side to side and yawned, his fist coming to hide those massive rows of teeth.
"Well, the priests probably won't fight unless absolutely necessary and depending on their faith, maybe not even then. Battle isn't all about fighting though. A lot of it is preparation, and if it is coming back, we can fortify the town. That would probably be the best way to do it but it puts all the people and all their property at risk. I'd rather fight it outside this place."

If only you knew, Nicolae thought.
Nicolae knew he couldn't tell Ren and Mihu the whole story, he couldn't tell anyone the whole story.
"I travel, I have no real home right now," Nicolae explained. "And I just happened to be passing through Cyrra. I do whatever I can to pick up some ka here and there, and this seemed like a good opportunity. Besides," Nicolae rubbed his horse's neck. "Shiba here could use the exercise."
Shiba snorted, almost as though she couldn't believe Nicolae had sad that.

Jaiden was flabbergasted. Not just that, he was disappointed. This Romari wasn't any fun. Their impending doom was little more than a conversation piece to Jaiden, and it had just been ruined. He went through various stages of looking stunned until his mouth was little more than a pale line, narrowing his eyes at the other. "Oh," he said, voice a little cold. "I'm not sure what we're worried about with you around." He had to admit, he was a little impressed with the other's knowledge. A little. The youth muttered something to himself and began flipping over cards, rather haphazardly.

He scratched the back of his head, watching the young man. He wasn't sure what else to say. The romari was confused as to how he had offended Jaiden. "I'm not too impressive, all we have to do is use our heads a little. My master says that the only thing that seperates a live warrior from a dead one is the reaction to that final attack. Panic, and you die for certain."

(no whining Mihu! You know as well as everyone that I'm technically on an LoA right now b/c of the move. I did manage to find a spare minute to breathe though, so while this won't be one of my better posts at least I'm posting (more than you should expect at the moment, mind you.)
"Ooo mysterious," Ren quipped at Nicolae's short-versed answer. He was mostly just teasing. Some people just didn't really like to talk much before turning to Mihu and correcting, "actually, I came to see to a sick little girl, stayed because of the yarl though, so I guess it's true enough."
Once on the open road, Rayne took off and Ren turned his head over his shoulder and calling behind him with a light laugh, "I guess we're racing there!"

Mihu leaned over his silver and whispered in his ear. In a flash, the pair were off, jetting after Ren. He let himself smile slightly as the wind ripped through his dark hair.
The race was fun, and significantly shortened the travel time. The mine could be seen in the distance just before dark. Mihu slowed his horse to a trot and pulled up to a small area free of grass. A cold firepit greeted them. Mihu dismounted and inspected the pit.
"Someone has been here recently," he said, kicking the blackened logs. Channels in the sandy soil long dried revealed the fire had been doused with water. "Within a day or two I would say." He opened a leather pouch about the size of his head and scooped in some ashes from the fire with his stick. He would use it and some animal fat to make a soap to sell to some villagers later on.
When he was done scooping the ash, he grabbed a quiver from his saddle and strapped it to his back before grabbing his shortbow.
"Shall I catch us some dinner?"

Nicolae looked around the area where someone had recently camped.
"Sounds good to me," Nicolae agreed. "Do you need any help, I'm a decent hunter myself. Or I could start a fire for cooking."
'Or perhaps I should do the hunting and leave these two alone,' Nicolae thought silently.

Ren dismounted, patting Rayne's mane a bit with a pleasant smile asking "There now, are you satisfied?" He didn't expect the horse to answer but that didn't stop him from a little good-natured teasing. He turned his gaze over his shoulder and blinked down at the fire pit, looking quizzically up at Mihumet. "Is that unusual? A road to a mine ought to be populated, right?" But at the same time, dwarven miners always moved as a group--one fire pit wouldn't be enough, probably--maybe...but maybe human miners were different. He'd only ever been to the dwarven mines of Auregon before now. Hmm....well, maybe he should just leave the rangering to the rangers.
"Yes please!" Ren answered. Food--it was definitely about time for that. Well, he could start the fire, but Nicolae had already offered, so unless Mihu took him up on the offer Ren would let him. "In that case I'll..." he thought a minute, there wasn't much else to do, really. "I'll find some herbs and berries and such to cook with." Yeah, that's something useful. "Don't worry, I know which ones are good."

"Dwarves have not visited this mine in months, and when they do, they leave a trail. They're not very subtle. These coals are barely cold, perhaps yesterday someone was here. And you're correct, miners rarely travel in such a small group."
He lifted his chin into the air, and breathed deeply, closing his eyes as he did so. He caught the slightest scent. Death. The burning stench of human flesh.
"Whatever is here is clearly not human, or is the worst kind of human. Whatever it was likes to feast on human flesh."
He glanced at Nicolae.
"You had better go with Ren. Just in case whatever it is decides to return. I am more capable of blending into the shadows. I will not be seen. Build a large fire. We will need it to keep the darkness at bay."
With a cursory glance, he turned, and ran off into the nearby wood, bow in hand.

Nicolae watched Mihumet go, his warnings making Nicolae's skin crawl. Feast on human flesh? First a Yarl, now a creature that feasts on human flesh? Nicolae made sure to keep his staff nearby while preparing the fire, a large fire, as instructed.
Then Nicolae followed Ren as he wandered to pick the berries and herbs that he had mentioned, fortunately they didn't have to go far from the camp. Nicolae's eyes kept darting from one place to another, making sure nothing was coming.
"What...creature do you suppose Mihumet was talking about?" Nicolae asked Ren, trying not to sound too nervous. Nicolae had dealt with a lot of dangerous situations in his time, but a creature that feeds on human flesh? That was new territory for him.
